Why this page exists
Evaluation produces a record. People remember what was tried, what was revised, what cost more than expected, what improved, who warned early, who adapted well, who resisted honestly, and who tried to claim the lesson afterward.
That memory matters. Without it, accountability dissolves. But memory becomes dangerous when the room starts using the record not to stay answerable to what happened, but to settle who now owns the right to interpret the whole past.
At that point the record stops acting like a shared memory and starts acting like canon. Certain readings become prestige objects. Certain people become the keepers of what the room is now allowed to say the story meant. Accountability survives only by flattering that new authority.
What canon pressure does to the record
Canon pressure freezes a living record into an inheritance claim. The person with the sharpest retrospective frame begins sounding like the person with the deepest legitimacy. The best summary starts behaving like ownership.
Then the record loses two things at once. It loses flexibility, because new evidence starts looking disloyal to the established reading. And it loses honesty, because people no longer quote the record to stay answerable to it. They quote it to gain standing inside the room.
Prestige theater follows quickly. Whoever can narrate the past most convincingly starts inheriting moral weight in the present. The room no longer asks, "What does the record require of us now?" It asks, "Who among us now sounds most like the record itself?"
What record without canon looks like
Record without canon is harder because it refuses both amnesia and enthronement.
What record without canon would look like
- The record stays quotable: people can still point to what happened, what changed, and what was learned without needing priestly permission to interpret it.
- Interpretation remains revisable: the room keeps memory alive without pretending the first convincing summary has now become the official meaning of the past.
- Accountability outranks inheritance: nobody gains lasting authority merely because part of the record favors the warning, bet, or caution they voiced earlier.
- Mixed histories remain usable: the room can remember that several people were partly right, partly wrong, or right in different phases without forcing the archive into one winner's story.
- Memory stays public, not sacred: the point of keeping the record is to remain answerable to what happened, not to manufacture a canon around whoever now sounds most historically correct.
This does not make all interpretations equal. It keeps interpretation subordinate to answerability instead of letting interpretation become a new throne.
What accountable memory needs
Accountable memory needs timestamps, sequence, quoted reasons, and a visible distinction between what the room directly observed and what it now infers from those observations. Without that distinction, memory quickly becomes retrospective fiction with better formatting.
It also needs a norm that says no one owns the record by sounding most coherent about it. Coherence matters. So does precision. But neither should become a new title deed over the room's past.
Most of all, it needs the courage to keep the record open. A trustworthy room does not protect itself by canonizing the past into one authorized reading. It protects itself by making the past harder to falsify and easier to revisit.
